Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor visited Beijing on 23 June to symbolically hand over the first of 17 volumes of the Iconotheca Valvasoriana collection to Chinese Prime ministerr Wen Jiabao as a gift from the Slovenian Government to the National Library of China.
The ceremonial presentation of the collection took place in the National Library of China. The presentation ceremony was attended by Zhou Heping, NLC director, Wang Fuguo, ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zhang Zhiqing, NLC deputy director, Wei Dawei, NLC deputy director, by Slovenian ambassador to China Marija Adanja, cultural counselor Sašo Podlesnik, and defense attaché of Slovenia Mitja Miklavec.
Iconotheca Valvasoriana is a collection of European graphics by Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641-1693). The collection is consisted of 17 large-size volumes which encompass a total of 7,752 scientific-critical facsimiles of prints and drawings by eminent European scientists and masters of the 16th and 17th century. The collection has been published by the Janez Vajkard Valvasor Foundation at the Slovenian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Zhou Heping received Iconotheca Valvasoriana on behalf of the NLC. Iconotheca Valvasoriana enriched the NLC collections, providing new literature for readers to further learn Slovenian and even European history and culture. Books are the carriers to promote mutual understanding of culture in different countries. Therefore, Iconotheca Valvasoriana will be an important link for the cultural exchange between the people in China and Slovenia.
